Why is a miniature Chihuahua called a teacup? Wouldn’t it be better named a tequila shot?

miniature… chihuahua? isn’t that a bit redundant? one of my former-roommates had a full-size chihuahua that seemed pretty tiny to me. any tinier and it would’ve been called a Cat Treat Chihuahua.
I think the extra-tiny chihuahuas are called “Teacup” because dog-show types are not comfortable with phrases like “tequila shot,” though how they can say Shih-tzu with a straight face is beyond me.
It is a funny name for a dog. But then again it is a really funny looking dog. Since Shi-tzu’s were bred as a lap dog for Chinese Emperors, I wonder if it means ball warmer? – Pure Evyl

Chihuahuas… wow, internet will not tell me what they were originally bred for. central america is pretty warm so there’s no real need for lap-warmer pets. Maybe they were bred to advertise fast food.
I do not know why they were bred that way but history suggests that the breed of dog named Techichi was a companion dog of the Ancient Toltecs and were bred with the Chinese Crested, which gave them their small stature. Whatever they are basically big eyed rats. But one did make a great Advertising icon. – Pure Evyl

I agree. Plus, they don’t fit in teacups anyhow, so the name is stupid.
Glad to see that I am not the only one. – Pure Evyl
